Since its founding in 1975, the Santa Monica Historical Society has been collecting and preserving the history, art and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area.  Today, the museum has one of the most extensive collections on the Santa Monica Bay Area history that includes historic documents, photographs and negatives, maps, telephone directories, rare books, school yearbooks, textiles, paintings, artifacts, and memorabilia.  The museum's image archive contains over 500,000 images and negatives comprised of the Museum Collection, Outlook Newspaper Collection, Bill Beebe Collection, Bob Smith Collection, City Scene Newspaper Collection, Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce Collection, and US Bank Collection.

The museum's exhibits and programs draw upon the museum's entire collection to tell the stories of the past years of the Santa Monica Bay Area.
